Women and Physical Activity
The Surgeon General has released a report targeting the effects of physical activity on women. Women engaging in physical activity can reduce their risk of coronary artery disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), colon cancer and diabetes. They can maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints; and they may enhance the effect of estrogen replacement therapy in decreasing bone loss after menopause.
The report suggests that 60% of U.S. women do not engage in the recommended amount of physical activiy, and more than 25% are not active at all. To get started on a program, the report suggests moderate intensity and short durations increasing with comfort and commitment.
To attain a level of physical fitness, one must commit to exercising aerobically 3 times a week for 30 continuous minutes and should add strength training 2-3 days per week and flexibility exercises daily.
As you decide to start seek out a wellness professional to guide you through the process. Start slowly and build gradually.
Make the journey fun by adding new activities as often as possible. Stay engaged by documenting your progress and rewarding your successes.
Is it easy to be physically fit? Absolutely not, but what, in life, is easy that is so worth while?
