Unexpected Endings
Unexpected Endings
I traveled to Denver a few weeks ago. Every seat-back contained a built-in screen with a variety of satellite programming. Included was a channel that tracks your flight across a map of the United States, giving airspeed and altitude as the little plane flies across the screen. I was enjoying tracking our approach as we descended into Denver until we hit 5,280 feet and there was a terrible bump and jerk on the airplane. For a split second I thought something was very wrong. Then I realized the altitude indicator was based on feet above sea level and not feet above the ground outside. We were in the “Mile High City” and safely on the runway.
I could not see out the window and it was dark, so I had been putting my faith in watching the signs and indicators. But I did not have the true picture at my disposal and the flight had come to an unexpected ending.
We might think we have all the signs and indicators of our life in order and believe that we are carefully watching, but the Bible says “the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night” (1 Thessalonians 5:2). Someday our time on this earth, or the time of a loved one, will be over. There will be an unexpected ending. So let us be as ready as possible. Let us get our spiritual house in order. Let us fix our relational problems now. Let us do the good and important things we want to do someday, today.
